Piano Lessons in Hamilton: What to Expect at Your First Lesson

Starting piano lessons is exciting — and maybe a little nerve-racking! Whether you’re a parent enrolling your child or an adult beginner starting for the first time, it helps to know what to expect when you walk into your first lesson at Keynotes by Andrew in Hamilton.

Step 1: Getting Comfortable

Every first lesson starts with a short conversation. We’ll chat about your goals, experience (if any), and what kind of music inspires you. This helps shape your personalized lesson plan — whether that’s preparing for Royal Conservatory exams, learning chords to your favourite pop songs, or building a classical foundation.

If you’re brand new, don’t worry — you don’t need to know a single note before coming in.

Step 2: Exploring the Piano

Next, we’ll get hands-on at the keys. Beginners learn:

  • How to sit properly at the piano
  • The layout of the white and black keys
  • Basic finger numbers and simple rhythm patterns

If you already have experience, we might play a short piece to gauge your current level and technique.

Step 3: Setting Goals Together

Your first lesson isn’t about perfection — it’s about direction. Together, we’ll set goals that match your schedule and learning style.
For some students, that means mastering a favourite song within a month. For others, it’s preparing for an RCM exam or improving sight-reading.

Step 4: Practice Tips and Resources

Before you leave, I’ll make sure you have clear, simple practice instructions. New students often start with 10-15 minutes a day, focusing on hand position and rhythm.
You’ll also receive digital or print sheet music, and I can recommend affordable beginner books or apps to support your practice at home.

Step 5: Building Confidence Week by Week

Learning piano is a journey, and your first lesson is just the beginning. As we move forward, you’ll see steady progress in coordination, rhythm, and confidence.
Every student learns at their own pace — what matters is that you enjoy the process.

What to Bring to Your First Lesson

  • A notebook or folder for your sheet music
  • Any previous music books (if you’ve taken lessons before)
  • An open mind and a willingness to learn

If your lessons are online, I’ll send you a Zoom link and quick setup guide before we start.
